Pu Leather

PU leather, or polyurethane leather, is an artificial leather made of thermoplastic polymer used for making furniture or shoes. 100% PU leather is completely artificial and is considered vegan. There are some types of PU leather called bicast leather that have actual leather but has a polyurethane coating on top. This type of PU leather takes the fibrous part of cowhide that are leftover from making genuine leather and put a layer of polyurethane on top of it.

Advantages of PU Leather

Cost-effective

One of the main advantages of PU leather is that it is much more cost-effective than traditional leather. PU leather is made from a synthetic material, which means that it can be produced at a much lower cost than real leather. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want the look and feel of leather without the high price tag.

Easy To Clean

PU leather is also much easier to clean than traditional leather. Unlike real leather, PU leather is not porous, which means that it does not absorb water or other liquids. This makes it incredibly easy to clean, as spills and stains can simply be wiped away with a damp cloth.

Durable

PU leather is also incredibly durable and long-lasting. Unlike traditional leather, which can crack and fade over time, PU leather is resistant to wear and tear and can maintain its appearance for many years. This makes it an excellent choice for furniture, clothing, and other items that are subject to regular use.

Versatile

PU leather can be made in a wide range of colours and styles, making it incredibly versatile. This means that it can be used to create a variety of different looks, from classic and traditional to modern and contemporary. PU leather can also be made to look like a variety of different animal hides, including cowhide, crocodile, and snake skin.

Eco-friendly

Finally, PU leather is more eco-friendly than traditional leather. PU leather is made from synthetic materials, which means that it does not require the use of animal hides. This makes it a more sustainable and ethical choice for those who are concerned about animal welfare and environmental issues.

How To Care For Pu Leather

Regular Cleaning

A simple way to clean PU leather is to wipe it down with a damp cloth. Ensure you dry it thoroughly after, as excess water can damage the material.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Stay clear of harsh cleaners or detergents when cleaning PU leather, as these can cause the material to crack or discolor. Opt for mild soapy water instead.

Condition Regularly

Even though PU leather doesn't dry out like natural leather, it can still benefit from occasional conditioning. Use a conditioner designed specifically for synthetic leathers.

Prevent Exposure to Direct Sunlight

Long-term exposure to the sun can fade and crack PU leather. Try to keep your PU leather items out of direct sunlight when not in use.

Avoid Sharp Objects

Sharp objects can easily puncture or scratch PU leather. Treat your PU leather items with care to prevent any unwanted damage.

Store Properly

Store your PU leather items in a dry and cool place. Avoid storing them in plastic, as it can cause the material to sweat and may lead to mold.

Production Process of PU Leather

PU leather is an artificial leather that is made by coating a fabric backing with a flexible polymer and then treating it to look like animal hide. The production process of PU leather is divided into four main steps:

1

Coating

In the first step, a polymer solution is poured onto a paper base that has a layer of silicone. The mixture is then passed between heated rollers to make it compact and uniform.

2

Texturing

After the coating has dried, the surface of the material is textured to resemble the grain of animal hide. This is done by pressing the material against a textured roller or plate.

3

Embossing

In some cases, the material is embossed with a pattern or design to make it look even more like real leather. This is done by pressing the material against an embossing roller or plate.

4

Finishing

Finally, the material is treated with a finishing coat to give it a glossy or matte appearance. This coat also helps to protect the material from wear and tear.

FAQ

Q: How does PU leather's environmental impact compare to that of real leather?

A: PU leather generally has a lower environmental impact than genuine leather, as it doesn't require animal farming and uses fewer natural resources, but concerns remain about the use of plastics and chemicals in its production.

Q: Have there been any advancements in PU leather to improve its durability and appearance?

A: Recent advancements in PU leather technology aim to enhance its durability, flexibility and appearance, making it closer to genuine leather while maintaining its animal-friendly advantages.

Q: What is PU leather made of?

A: PU leather is made by coating a fabric backing material with a liquid polyurethane resin. This is essentially a kind of liquid plastic.

Q: How to make PU leather less shiny?

A: The safest way to make PU leather less shiny is simply to use your product frequently. The glossy surface will start to lose its lustre fairly quickly.

Q: Is PU leather real leather?

A: No — PU leather is partially made from polyurethane, which is a synthetic material. Real leather is made from animal hides.

Q: Is PU leather toxic?

A: Many now regard PU as a safer alternative to PVC leather, a variety of synthetic leather that used to dominate the market. The issue with PU leather is that once in a landfill site, it slowly emits microplastics that have an adverse effect on humans and the environment.
