Visual & Hand Feel Quality Inspection (On-Site Quick Check)

Basic visual and tactile testing is the first gate of microfiber leather pre-production quality control, helping filter obvious surface defects instantly without professional lab equipment.

  • Surface Appearance Check: Inspect the leather surface for uneven coloring, batch color difference, pinholes, scratches, wrinkles, bubble traces, and distorted printing. Compare samples with the approved color swatch under both natural daylight and standard factory lighting to avoid ambient light color deviation.
  • Grain Texture Consistency: Verify uniform grain patterns across the entire sample. Reject materials with missing grains, irregular textures, or inconsistent surface gloss that affect finished product aesthetics.
  • Tactile Hand Feel Evaluation: Check softness, fullness, and draping performance. Qualified microfiber leather should not feel sticky, oily, or overly hard, and must match the hand feel standard of the confirmed reference sample.
  • Base Fabric Inspection: Examine the microfiber non-woven backing for loose fibers, exposed threads, uneven thickness, and poor bonding foundations that cause post-production delamination.

Dimensional & Basic Physical Parameter Testing

Accurate dimension and parameter testing ensures microfiber leather meets customized specification requirements and avoids size errors in bulk production.

  • Thickness Testing: Use a professional thickness gauge to measure multiple random positions on the sample. Record average thickness and check if it falls within the agreed tolerance range to prevent uneven material thickness.
  • Effective Width Verification: Confirm the usable width of the leather roll, inspect edge curling and irregular selvedge that causes material waste during cutting.
  • Gram Weight Testing (g/m²): Weigh standard-sized specimens to verify unit weight compliance, a key indicator for material density and durability consistency.

Core Physical Performance Tests (Key Durability Indicators)

Physical performance tests determine the service life and structural stability of microfiber leather, serving as the core standard for bulk production approval.

Tensile Strength & Tear Resistance Test

Cut standard dumbbell-shaped specimens to test tensile strength, break elongation, and tear resistance. This test is essential for shoe uppers, bags, and stretch upholstery materials. Unqualified tensile and tear resistance will cause cracking and damage during sewing, stretching, and daily use of finished products.

 Peel Strength Test

Peel strength detects the bonding tightness between the PU surface film and microfiber base layer. Low peel strength directly leads to surface delamination, peeling, and blistering in finished products, which is a common quality defect in inferior microfiber leather.

Rubbing & Martindale Abrasion Resistance Test

Abrasion resistance defines the long-term wear resistance of microfiber leather, especially critical for furniture and automotive interior materials.

  • Dry & Wet Rubbing Fastness Test: Rub the sample with standard friction cloth to check for surface color transfer, peeling, and coating damage.
  • Martindale Abrasion Test: Simulate long-term daily friction wear, record the maximum abrasion cycles before surface damage to evaluate wear durability.

 Flex Resistance (Bending) Test

Perform thousands of repeated bending cycles on test specimens to check for surface cracking, crease whitening, and film fracture. This test targets frequently bent products like handbags, shoe uppers, and protective gear, verifying material flexibility and fatigue resistance.

Environmental Aging & Chemical Compliance Testing

Environmental and chemical tests ensure microfiber leather adapts to different usage scenarios and meets global market safety standards (REACH, California Proposition 65, GB standards).

Color Fastness Test

  • Light Fastness: Test anti-fading performance under long-term sunlight exposure, mandatory for outdoor furniture and automotive interior leather.
  • Sweat Fastness: Prevent dye transfer when contacting human skin, suitable for wearable and indoor upholstery products.

 Hydrolysis Resistance Test

Hydrolysis resistance is the most unique and critical indicator of high-quality microfiber leather. Adopt high-temperature and high-humidity accelerated aging tests to simulate long-term use environments. Poor hydrolysis resistance causes material hardening, chalking, peeling, and aging failure within 1–3 years, especially for outdoor and automotive applications.

 Low-Temperature Resistance Test

Place specimens in low-temperature environments for constant-temperature treatment, then conduct bending tests. Check for surface cracking to verify low-temperature flexibility, applicable for products sold in cold-climate regions.

Hazardous Substance Testing

Test formaldehyde, heavy metals, DMF, phthalates, and VOC content to comply with international environmental protection regulations, ensuring safe export and market access.

Real Production Simulation Tests

Simulate actual production and end-use conditions to avoid quality failures caused by mismatched production processes.

  • Sewing Simulation Test: Use mass-production needles and threads to sew sample leather, check for stitch cracking and material piercing damage.
  • Adhesion Bonding Test: Apply formal mass-production glue to bond microfiber leather with foam or auxiliary substrates, inspect for bubbling, delamination, and weak bonding.
  • Heat Resistance & Hot Press Test: Simulate hot pressing and high-temperature storage processes to check for material shrinkage, gloss change, and surface blistering.

Standard Pre-Bulk Production Confirmation Process

Follow this standardized process to lock quality standards before mass production:

(1) Confirm full technical specifications: thickness, gram weight, color number, physical indicators, and chemical compliance requirements.

(2) Complete full lab testing for pre-production samples to verify all indicators meet standards.

(3) Produce small-batch pilot rolls for secondary appearance and performance re-inspection.

(4) Sign and confirm the final approved sample; all bulk production strictly follows the confirmed sample and test standards.

Industry-Specific Quality Test Standards

Different application scenarios require targeted test priorities to match market demand:

  • Automotive Microfiber Leather: Strict requirements for hydrolysis resistance, light fastness, abrasion resistance, and low VOC emissions.
  • Luggage & Shoe Leather: Prioritize tear strength, tensile performance, and flex resistance for frequent bending and stretching.
  • Furniture Upholstery Leather: Focus on Martindale abrasion resistance, color fastness, and skin-friendly hand feel.
